- Kiwi kids news
People living near the epicentre of Australia's biggest earthquake in 15 years have reported being shaken, but otherwise escaping unscathed.
The 6.1 earthquake struck near Ernabella, in South Australia's far north, just before 8.30pm (CDT) on Friday.
Ernabella, an indigenous arts hub, is home to about 500 Aboriginalpeople, with more living in about six communities in the surrounding region.
The remote area is just south of the border with the Northern Territory, about 317 kilometres southwest of Alice Springs, 230km southeast of Uluru and 415km northwest of Coober Pedy.
Earthquake hits Ernabella
- New Zealand Herald
The biggest earthquake to hit Australia in 15 years occurred near the Aboriginal community of Ernabella (Pukatja) on Friday evening.
The 6.1 magnitude quake struck just before 8.30pm (local time) in South Australia's far north.
Ernabella teacher Peter Ruwoldt was at home with his wife when the quake hit, and initially thought the air-conditioner must have malfunctioned.
"I thought [my wife] must have turned it on and the fan must have got out balance and was about to fly off its axis," he says.
"...and I ran down the passageway yelling out 'turn it off turn it off!'"
Mr Ruwoldt says the quake lasted around 30 seconds and was a terrifying experience.
"The place shook...there was a huge loud rumble," he says.
"We ran outside and there was a young girl pushing a pusher and she said 'I'm scared.'"
"Adults were running out yelling out for their children...kids were running towards their home, it was pretty terrifying."
While no significant damage has been reported in the community, Peter says he's photographed large cracks in the earth around the epicentre, some 20 km's away from Ernabella.
"You can see some displacement of the ground, I reckon four or more inches raised," he says.
"There's some other photos where you can see rocks have been dislodged and tumbled down the hill."
The earthquake is the third to hit Ernabella in recent weeks, with a 4.3 magnitude and 3.8 magnitude quake also occurring in the past fortnight.
